Here we are, approaching 2017, and SUVs continue to rule the roads. Three-row crossover SUVs are ideal for tooling around town, hauling, towing, off-roading or even taking the family on a long vacation.

With fuel economy continually improving and overall luxury features getting better by the year, the real question is why more people aren't driving these beasts. Among the best crossover SUVs out there is the Dodge Durango. Drivers in Freehold, Farmingdale, Monroe Township and Asbury Park should read this review of the 2017 Dodge Durango.

2017 Dodge Durango

With a lot of attitude, slick profile and powerful V8 engine, the Durango has a lot to offer right out of the gate. However, inside it continues to deliver with tons of passenger space and the very best in luxury, convenience and technology features. Between a best-in-class touchscreen, confident acceleration, outstanding towing and a smooth ride, it's got a great deal to offer.

Trim and Tech

This three-row SUV offers four trim levels: the base SXT, the GT, the Citadel and the R/T. Basic features include automatic headlights, fog lights, keyless entry and ignition, heated mirrors, tri-zone climate control, cruise control, auto-dim rearview mirror, 5-inch touchscreen interface for infotainment, Bluetooth connectivity (phone only), six-speaker sound and USB, auxiliary and SD card slots. Automatic engine stop-start to save on fuel is also standard.

Higher level trims net you a variety of additional technology and convenience features including LED running lights, xenon headlights, automatic wipers and high beams, rearview camera, parking and proximity sensors, remote start, auto-dim driver's side mirror, heated steering wheel, power seats, 115-volt power outlet, driver memory settings, Bluetooth for streaming audio, extra USB charging ports, satellite radio tuner, upgraded 8.4-inch touchscreen, voice controls, power liftgate, navigation system and more.

The levels of technology and trim packages on the new Dodge Durango are truly impressive. It doesn't matter how you shake it, from base all the way up to R/T, you'll be thrilled with the available options.

Power and Safety

All three trim levels except for the R/T come standard with a 3.6-liter V6 engine that delivers up to 290 horsepower and puts out up to 260 lb-ft of torque, delivered through an 8-speed automatic transmission. With certain packages, this can be increased to 295 hp. Standard models are rear-wheel drive with AWD an optional add-on. A V8 is optional (standard on the R/T) which delivers 360 hp through the same 8-speed automatic and optional AWD. EPA-estimated fuel economy for the V6 is around 21mpg combined for both rear-wheel and AWD models; on the V8 engine the estimated economy is around 17 mpg. However, the heavier engine can tow p to 7,400 lbs.

Safety features are exceptional as well, with the expected airbags, antilock brakes, and available rearview camera, parking sensors, emergency assistance and many other advanced safety options. The IIHS and government crash tests give the 2017 Durango high marks.

For all of this, the Durango also offers a refined, comfortable driving experience with tons of room, a quiet ride and confident steering and acceleration.
