Most New Jersey car owners are required by law to take their vehicle for car inspections every two years. Staying on top of these inspections not only allows your car to run properly, they also keep the roadways throughout Freehold, Farmingdale, and Monroe Township safe and the air clean.
If you're taking your car for an inspection soon, take a look at the Freehold Dodge service center checklist of what to do before taking it in and what to expect while it's in the shop.
Know Your Car Inspection Deadline
A sticker on the front windshield has your inspection due date printed on it, and car owners should be aware of this deadline to avoid getting citations.
Car owners can take their vehicle for inspection two months prior to the deadline, and the sooner they take it in, the better.
Bring All Necessary Documents and Car Information to Your Inspection
When you take your car for an inspection, you must bring your driver's license, registration, and proof of insurance. Any photocopies, faxes, or emailed documents are considered invalid and won't be accepted. The night before your inspection, collect all of the documents you need so you don't forget them before taking your car in.
New Jersey Car Inspection Emissions Test
Car owners are required by law to take their vehicle for emissions tests every two years to improve New Jersey's air quality. When you take your car for emissions test inspections, the mechanic will determine what kind of engine your car has and prepare it for testing.
They'll then perform the emissions test catered for the year, make, and model of your vehicle to determine if it meets air quality standards. In the final stage of the inspection, the mechanic will make sure your gas cap is stable to eliminate any excess fumes escaping into the environment. Once completed, the inspector will put a new two-year sticker on the windshield.
What to Do if You Fail Inspection
If your car fails its inspection, make the proper repairs, complete your emissions repair facility paperwork, and bring the forms back for reinspection. You'll have up to one month from the last day of the month noted on the inspection sticker to complete this.
New Jersey Mechanical Inspections
Although mechanical inspections are no longer required by law in New Jersey, we recommend drivers take their car in annually to make sure your car is running properly. Doing so eliminates future damage and expensive repairs to your vehicle. These inspections also make the roads safer by lowering the chances of mechanical failure while the car is in drive.
