Ram 2500 vs Silverado 2500 - Power

Tough jobs call for tougher trucks, which is why we zeroed in on engine power and performance ahead of anything else. Luckily, both of these trucks step up to the plate with plenty of power.

The 2017 Ram 2500 features three unique engine options that allow drivers to balance horsepower and torque to fit their needs. The 5.7-liter HEMI® V8 engine starts us out with a whopping 383 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque.

The Chevy Silverado comes close-ish to matching that with its own 6.0L Vortec V8 that produces 360 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque.

Both trucks also offer a turbodiesel engine option, the Ram's is a 6.7L Cummins® Turbo Diesel and the Silverado's is a 6.6L Duramax Turbo Diesel V8. Both engines offer incredible power that tops 800 lb-ft of torque.

The Ram 2500 has an additional engine option, a 6.4L HEMI® V8 that delivers 410 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque. It's a good middle ground between the standard V8 and the turbodiesel engine.

Towing & Payload

For most truck owners, towing capacity is a big deal. The Ram 2500 offers three max options for towing capacity, depending on the corresponding engine type you choose. The 5.7L HEMI® V8, for example, will start you off at 13,890 lb of towing capacity.

Jump up to the 6.4L V8 and you'll increase towing capacity about 3,000 lb to 16,320 lbs. The Ram 2500 maxes out at 17,980 lb of towing capacity when equipped with the 6.7L Turbo Diesel engine.

The Chevy Silverado 2500 keeps up when equipped with its Turbo Diesel V8, with up to an 18,000-pound maximum when specifically using a fifth-wheel or gooseneck trailer. Its gasoline V8 engine rests somewhere in between the capabilities of the Ram's two mid-level engines at 14,300 lbs for max towing.

While these towing stats are competitive, overall the 2017 Ram 2500 Turbo Diesel can carry more in its bed, earning a higher payload rating of 4,184 pounds that beats the Silverado 2500's max payload capacity of 3,534 lbs by an impressive 650 pounds.

Ram 2500 vs. Silverado 2500: Truck Technology

Modern pickup trucks have come a long way from being solely utilitarian, and the Ram 2500 and Silverado are no different. Both trucks offer a color touchscreen with available infotainment systems, but the Ram 2500 once again outdoes the 2017 Silverado 2500 by sporting an 8.4-inch display over the Silverado's 8-inch display.

After that though, these two HD trucks begin to play nice, featuring similar rearview camera systems for easy trailer hitching, Wi-Fi mobile hotspot technology, and available navigation systems.
